Guzman shows the reclamation of history for the indigenous people of Chile in “The Pearl Button”. The contrast of his past work that represents his Chilean pride with the tribesmen’s rejection of a Chilean identity shows a perspective that many indigenous groups share about their identities and history. The significance of the water as a key life line for the interviewed subjects as something that was sacred to their people and in juxtaposition with the Chilean government that drops bodies into the water is an underlining darkness from the past that Guzman makes a constant throughout his documentaries.
