The Pearl Button

As we go on into the work of Patricio Guzman, we see once more the themes of memory, desertion, and space. This film strikes you with one simple image, that being a button made of pearl. As it was originally crafted from a material taken from the ocean so it returns, but with a different meaning. The simple item has now taken on more meaning than it ever had. Without the full story, we may not know the button’s exact journey, but we can understand what it represents. The potential for understanding increases so much as we see just one item. It is almost as if we use physical pieces of our world to finish the link with the stories we are told and their relationship to us in our real lives. After all, I can only relate to someone’s words so much, but to see a piece of clothing similar to one that I wear carries great significance. Not only does it represent the death caused by Pinochet, but also the system that took from Chile’s native waters. There is so much thus represented that a singular button creates great meaning and finishes a narrative with silent dignity.
